Little Earth Montessori Rosedale Celebrates Korean Independence Day

Learning about different cultures is a wonderful way for children to develop empathy, compassion and understanding, and yesterday children at Little Earth Montessori Rosedale were given an insight into Korean culture.

August 15 is Korean Independence Day, a celebration that marks the end of the decades-long Japanese occupation – and the only Korean public holiday celebrated by both North and South Korea.

Here in Rosedale, centre children hoisted the Korean national flag and sang the national anthem. Mason’s mother Donna explained what the day signifies and brought in some Korean treats for morning tea. As well as sampling new cuisine, children enjoyed the opportunity to make music with two Korean instruments, the jang-go and the kayagum.
